The essential parts of an ordinary raingauge are a funnel through which the rain water is collected in a receiver and a measuring glass (rain measure) with which the rain water collected is measured.  There is an additional cylinder in order to avoid possible losses due to overflow from the receiver.  The correct type of rain measure suitable to the type of raingauge in use has to be used for the measurement of rainfall.  The rain measure is graduated for every 0.2 mm of rainfall.

Rain Gauge Self Recording

Desc : As per IS 5235-1969 Self Recording Rain Gauge is in conformance with the standards of IS:1535/1969. The Self Recording Rain Gauge (SRRG) consists of a rain water collector and a rainfall recording mechanism mounted on a base. The rainfall measuring unit consists of a float chamber containing a light metal float and a siphen chamber. The chart is wound on rotating drum driven by mechanical clock which rotates 1 revolution in 25 hours. The float rises as per the rainfall & so the recording pen also rises plotting a line of on the chart. When the siphen chamber is filled completely, the water in it drains out completely called "Siphoning". When siphoning occurs, the pen fixed on the float rod falls to the zero mark on the chart and the gauge is ready to record rainfall again for 10 mm rainfall.

Desc : As per IS 5235-1969 Self Recording Rain Gauge is in conformance It consists of a circular collecting area of 127 mm diameter which is connected to a funnel. The rim of the collector is set at a height of 30.5 cm above the ground level. The funnel discharges the rainfall into a receiving vessel. The funnel and receiving vessels are housed in a metallic container. The receiving bottle normally holds a maximum of 10 cm of rain and in case of heavy rainfall the measurement must be done frequently. Last reading must be taken at 8.30 AM and the sum of the previous readings in the past 24 hours entered as the total rainfall of the day
